Which HeatShield Models This Applies To

HeatShield isn’t a liner in the traditional sense. It’s a cerfractory sealant system applied inside an existing flue, typically over damaged clay tile. The product comes in two application types: HeatShield Joint Repair (for mortar joint gaps and minor cracking) and HeatShield CeCure (a full resurfacing sleeve for severely deteriorated flues). Both work with the same base material we stock and apply. The compatibility question isn’t about a model number on your liner. It’s about the flue dimensions and the condition of the existing clay tile. HeatShield is approved for use in flues serving gas, oil, and wood-burning appliances, but the flue must be a minimum of 6 inches in diameter for full CeCure application. Narrower flues, like those on some older Jamaica row houses built before 1940, may require a different approach. The key gotcha: HeatShield is not a structural repair. If the clay tiles have collapsed or shifted out of alignment, the flue needs a stainless steel liner from DuraFlex or Gelco instead. Signs Your HeatShield Flue Liner Replacement Is Failing

• Flakes of cerfractory material falling into the firebox. The HeatShield coating is failing in sections, usually because the underlying clay tile cracked further after the original application or because moisture got behind the sealant.
• Water streaks or efflorescence on the chimney exterior. Moisture is penetrating the flue wall. This is common in Jamaica where freeze-thaw cycles from November through March stress older masonry, and it will degrade HeatShield from the outside in.
• A lingering smoke smell in the house after a fire. The flue is no longer drafting correctly, which can mean the HeatShield surface has delaminated and is restricting airflow or pulling flue gases back into the living space.
• Visible gaps at clay tile joints in the chimney interior. HeatShield was designed to seal those joints, but if the original liner keeps moving, joints reopen. A camera scan will show exactly where.
• Higher heating bills or weak draft at the appliance. A failing liner changes the flue’s ability to pull combustion gases out efficiently. If you’re seeing this plus any of the above, the liner is no longer doing its job.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check the firebox for flakes of fallen material and look for water stains on the ceiling near the chimney. What you shouldn’t do is attempt any HeatShield application yourself. The material has specific mixing ratios and cure times that affect how well it bonds to the flue wall. Getting it wrong means another $3,000 repair in two years. The safety issue is real: a liner that’s not sealing means combustion gases, including carbon monoxide, can migrate into your home.
