In Jamaica, we see mostly two Gelco throat damper configurations in pre-1960 rowhouses: the 6-inch and 8-inch rectangular models with a front-pivot cast frame, and the less common round 7-inch unit found in smaller flues. Top-mount Gelco dampers are standard on newer liners, typically the 6-inch, 7-inch, or 8-inch round slip-on models with a stainless cable running down to a bracket in the firebox.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha: Gelco throat damper frames are cast to specific firebox throat widths, and a 6-inch Gelco plate will not drop into an 8-inch frame, even if it looks close. Before you order anything online, measure the inside width and depth of the throat opening at the narrowest point, then check the pivot-pin configuration. Older Gelco dampers use a front-pivot pin design; some mid-1980s and later models moved to a center-pivot design that changes the replacement plate entirely. When we can’t read a faded tag or stamp, we measure on site and match against Gelco’s current spec sheets. For older units where Gelco no longer makes the exact plate, we use a machined aftermarket equivalent that matches the original dimensions and pivot geometry. We never rig an undersized plate into an oversized frame with shims. That’s how you get a damper that binds on one side and lets cold air pour in on the other.

What you should not do is try to remove a seized Gelco damper plate or replace a top-mount damper cable. Forcing them out with the damper housing in place means working at an awkward angle with a pry bar, and if the cast frame cracks, you’re now replacing the entire assembly instead of the plate.
