Which Copperfield Models This Applies To

Copperfield makes caps in three series that cover nearly every flue you’ll find in Jamaica housing stock. The single-flue models (CF-S series) fit standard square or round clay tile liners from 6×6 inches to 13×13 inches. Multi-flue caps (CF-M series) span across two or more adjacent tiles and require field measurement. Their specialty top-mount models for prefab or factory-built fireplaces use a different mounting ring entirely.

Identifying your exact cap matters because Copperfield changed their corner-mounting bracket pitch around 2016. Older caps use a ¾-inch pitch corner bolt; newer ones use a 1-inch pitch. An older replacement cap will not mate cleanly to a newer bracket, which is a mistake we see too often in Jamaica when someone tries to save money with a mismatched part. We always check this before quoting.

On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question for Copperfield specifically: the OEM stainless caps from Copperfield are well-made but priced at a premium for the brand name. Signs Your Copperfield Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

• Rust bleed down the brick or crown. The cap’s steel has begun to fail, and the rust carries iron oxide into the masonry. Once you see staining, the cap itself is usually to the point of needing replacement, not repair.
• Rattling or scraping sounds in high wind. The corner brackets have loosened or the mounting screw has sheared. Left alone, wind vibration will widen the hole in the mortar and the cap will eventually lift off entirely.
• Water inside the firebox after rain. A cap with a missing or buckled lid lets rain run straight down the flue. In Jamaica’s humid summers and hard downpours, this breeds must and accelerates liner deterioration.
• Birds, squirrels, or nesting material in the flue. The screen has torn or rusted through. Gap size matters here: Copperfield’s standard mesh is ¾-inch, which keeps squirrels out but won’t stop smaller birds if the screen is damaged.
• Visible warping or lifting at one corner. The cap is no longer seated flat. A lifted corner catches wind like a sail, which is exactly how caps get ripped off in a noreaster.
