Signs Your Copperfield Crown Repair Is Failing

• Hairline or spiderweb cracks across the crown surface. These open and close with temperature swings. Water gets in, freezes, and widens them. What was a cosmetic crack in March is a structural crack by next January.
• Efflorescence: white, chalky deposits on the brick below the crown. That’s dissolved minerals leaching out of the masonry, which means water is moving through the crown or the bond line where the crown meets the flue tile. The white stuff isn’t the problem; it’s the receipt for the problem.

• Visible flue tile damage at the top of the chimney. If the flue tile is cracked or shifting, the crown has failed as a cap and the tile is now doing the crown’s job, badly. At that point you’re in for a crown repair and probably a flue tile repair or liner evaluation.
