How DuraFlex Products Fail - and How We Fix Them

• DuraFlex 316L single-ply corrosion at the flue base. In Jamaica’s older masonry chimneys, condensation collects where the liner meets the smoke chamber. The 316L alloy handles wood-burning temps fine but pinholes form in that damp zone after 10-15 years. We see it constantly on liners installed in the 2000s. Fix: sectional replacement or full reline, depending on how far the pitting runs up the flue.
• Ovalized liner collapse on the Smooth Wall series. DuraFlex’s smooth-wall liner has a thinner profile than the corrugated 316Ti. When it was installed undersized or pulled through tight masonry offsets, it can ovalize years later. The first sign is usually a lazy draft and smoke rollout at the firebox. We confirm with a camera and replace the deformed section with correctly sized 316Ti.
• Corrugation-tear at the flex bend. The corrugated DuraFlex line is flexible, but repeated heating cycles at sharp angles in Jamaica flues with offset clay tile can crack the corrugations at the bend. That’s a carbon monoxide pathway, not just a draft problem. We replace the segment and correct the offset where possible.
• Improper tee-snout connection at the appliance inlet. DuraFlex liners connect to stove or insert outlets with a tee fitting. If the snout was sealed with silicone instead of the correct mechanical connection, it separates under heat expansion. We find this on self-installed and handyman jobs. Fix is a proper tee reconnection and a draft test after.
• Failed top plate and rain cap seal on the DuraFlex aluminum cap. Jamaica’s nor’easters and freeze-thaw cycles work on the cap seal until water runs down the outside of the liner. The liner itself often looks fine on camera but the masonry around it’s spalling. We replace the cap assembly and repoint the crown as needed.

   Camera inspection first. We run a Level 2 camera scan per NFPA 211. You get the photos and measurements. Clause 4 of the Haven Standard requires a photo record on every job, and we’ve done that since 2009.

   Parts decision. For warranty-safe DuraFlex work, we use OEM DuraFlex components where the failure is covered or the liner is mid-life. Where an original liner was undersized or the manufacturer part is discontinued, we move to 316Ti equivalent with a written note in the scope about why.

   The repair or rebuild. Liner removal, flue prep, new liner installation, top plate and cap. If the crown or smoke chamber is compromised, we address that in the same visit when scope allows.

   Combustion and draft test. We fire the appliance if it’s operable and verify draft with a manometer reading. You get the reading, not a “looks good.”
