The compatibility gotcha is the flue tile size. Jamaica row houses and prewar homes often have flue tiles that run an inch or two off today’s standard dimensions. A cap listed for a 13″ x 13″ tile may not seat on a 12″ x 12″ tile, and the difference isn’t something you want to discover with a hammer drill in the rain. • Water stains on the ceiling or wall near the chimney. Rain is entering through the cap and running down the flue. Caps that rust at the base plate allow water to sit on the crown and find its way in.
• The cap is missing, crooked, or hanging from the flue. High wind lifts a cap when the mounting brackets have corroded. We see this most often after late-winter storms when the metal has been stressed by ice expansion.
• Debris inside the fireplace looks like leaves, twigs, or nesting material. Once the mesh screen rusts out, the cap loses its only barrier against Jamaica’s squirrel population.
• A burning smell or visible rust in the firebox. Rust flakes traveling down the flue indicate water above. That water is almost always coming through the cap, the crown, or both.
