HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation: The Jamaica Owner’s Guide

You’ll usually find out a cap is gone in one of three ways: you see water staining on the ceiling near the chimney, you hear birds or animals in the flue, or our camera comes back up with a shot of daylight where the cap used to be. Which HeatShield Models This Applies To

The two series we handle most often in Jamaica are the HeatShield round multi-flue caps, which fit 6-inch through 8-inch round liners, and the HeatShield square leg-mount caps, sized from 8×8 to 13×13 inches. If you’re unsure which you have, the easiest check is to look at the top of the chimney: round cap, round liner; square cap with legs, square flue tile.

One compatibility gotcha we run into constantly: HeatShield caps designed for masonry flues do not fit the oval ends of certain factory-built chimneys, and the mounting brackets are not interchangeable. We’ve had Jamaica homeowners order a round cap online only to find their flue is actually a 7-inch oval, which means the cap won’t seat and the warranty won’t apply. Signs Your HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

• Water stains on the ceiling or wall near the chimney chase. This usually means the cap’s lid has cracked or blown off, and rain is running straight down the flue. In Jamaica’s older homes, we see this most often after a heavy winter where ice built up around the cap base and worked the seams loose.
• Bird noise or scratching from inside the chimney. A failed spark screen or a missing side screen is an open invitation. Starlings and sparrows are the usual culprits in the Jamaica area, and they can build a nest surprisingly fast once that screen is compromised.
• Visible rust streaks running down the chimney crown. This means the cap’s base or legs have started corroding, and the rust is being carried down with rain onto the crown itself. Once the base weakens, the next good windstorm can take the whole cap off.
• Debris inside the firebox: twigs, leaves, or pieces of metal screen. If you’re finding small metal fragments in your fireplace, that’s not old creosote, that’s the cap disintegrating from above, and the pieces are falling down the flue.
• Draft problems that weren’t there last season. A partially displaced cap can obstruct the flue opening and starve the fireplace of air. If the fire is suddenly smoky or sluggish in a chimney that used to draw fine, the cap is one of the first things we check.
